This time we've gathered the most common cliches that are found in almost every shounen anime. Here's our review!
1. The zero to hero concept
My Hero Academia Official Website |
Most shounen anime puts emphasis on the zero to hero concept. Where the protagonist is initially shown as a person with no power. However, at the end of the series, the protagonist ends up as the strongest character in the series. Not only that, the protagonist also often has big dreams, such as becoming the best hero or the leader of a country.
Protagonists usually start out weak but have great potential, however they don't know how to bring out their potential. The series will focus on how the main character tries to bring out his full potential and continues to grow stronger.
2. The protagonist has rivals who are more talentedMy Hero Academia Official Website |
Almost every shounen anime protagonist has a rival who is more talented and popular than the protagonist. While the protagonist has to train hard to gain strength, their rivals only need a little practice because they are already born with talent.
This is exemplified in My Hero Academia, in the rivalry between Midoriya Izuku and Bakugo Katsuki. Midoriya has to go through rigorous physical training to gain strength, while Bakugo is already born with great strength. Usually, this kind of competition will be won by the protagonist or end in a draw.
3. Power-ups, transformations and the power of friendship
IMDB |
Protagonists in shounen anime often face enemies who are stronger than them. Usually, if the protagonist is cornered, they can only depend on three things, namely gaining new powers, transforming into a stronger form, or better yet relying on the power of friendship.
If the character gets a new power, then that power is usually given by other people or the awakened potential within the protagonist. If they rely on transformation, then they must use their inner strength and believe that they can become stronger. Finally, the most boring, when they rely on the power of friendship, where the protagonist only needs motivation from his friends.
4. Characters shouting the name of the attack or ability out loudIMDB |
It's not a shounen anime if the characters don't shout the name of their attack. Although it sounds unnecessary, every shounen character always shouts the name of their ability when carrying out an attack. The names of their moves tend to be always cool so it doesn't sound embarrassing when being shouted.
Even though it seems useless, this is what makes the fight scenes in shounen anime feel even more intense. Because when the characters shout the name of their ability with all their might, their fight will also be more emotional.
5. Tournament arcsIMDB |
Tournament arcs are usually the most awaited thing in shounen anime. normally, the tournament arc is also one of the best arcs in a shounen anime. The reason behind it is, that the tournament arc can be a place for the creators to introduce new characters and abilities. Tournament arcs usually feature many powerful characters gathered in one place to battle each other head to head. Of course, the battle will get fiercer as the tournament progresses. There is always an intense battle in every arc of the tournament. Shounen anime always uses the same format, so there are a lot of cliches that appear in anime. Even so, the creators of the shounen genre always have a unique way of making these cliches seem less boring. In your opinion, what other cliches are often found in shounen anime? |
